NUI Galway is now offering places for eight persons with intellectual disabilities to go to university as part of the Going to College Pilot Project. Students will start in September 2011 for two years.
Going to College Pilot Project is a university/community partnership with the UNESCO Chair, Child & Family Research Centre, NUI Galway, the Community Knowledge Initiative, NUI Galway and the National Federation of Voluntary Bodies Providing Services to People with Intellectual Disability to support the civic engagement of persons who have an intellectual disability through access to inclusive higher education at NUI Galway.
What is the Going to College Pilot Project?
The Going to College Pilot Project is an initiative to support the civic engagement of persons with an intellectual disability through access to inclusive higher education at NUI Galway. Through a two-year programme eight students will be supported to share in the student experience (e.g. involvement in academic, social, cultural and sporting activities). Each student will select a programme of study and will also have the opportunity to undertake civic engagement and work placement opportunities.
The aim of the project is to help each student to grow and develop, to take part in the life of the university, and to get the skills that will help them live a more independent life as part of their own community.
What will Students do at University?
Each student will be able to:
- choose the subject(s) they want to study and go to classes with other students who are studying the same subject(s);
- take part in volunteering through the ALIVE Programme;
do a work placement; - join university clubs and societies.
Applicants need to be at least 18 years of age on the date of application.
Applications should be in NUI Galway by Friday, 29th April 2011.
