Deadline for Irish Water registration to be extended

(24 Oct 2014)

The deadline for households to submit account details to Irish Water has been extended to the end of November. The Commission for Energy Regulation announced today that a proposal by Irish Water to extend the deadline for registration from the original date of October 31st had been accepted.

The first bills will now be issued to households at the end of January next year, four weeks later than originally planned. “These bills will include household and children free allowances provided that people register with Irish Water by the end of November,” the commission said in a short statement.

Tánaiste Joan Burton told the Dáil yesterday that the original timeline for water charges was “too ambitious”, while Taoiseach Enda Kenny said the Government would provide clarity on changes to the water charging system “in the next few weeks”.

There has been speculation that the cap on bills - which is in place until next summer for all households - could be extended until late 2016 when the majority of meters have been installed.

Government TDs told parliamentary party meetings earlier this week that some families were concerned they would face annual water bills of up to €900.

The assessed charge is set at €176 for the first adult, with an extra €102 per additional adult in the home. This would mean a family with two dependent adult children would face an annual bill of €482. Children under 18 will not be charged for water, as per Government commitments made earlier this year.

Discussions have already taken place at the Economic Management Council (EMC) on additional water charges measures, with an announcement expected in the coming weeks.
